My first residential project in the Bay Area was a personal one: building an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in my brother’s backyard in Berkeley. Taking it on as an owner-builder, without the direct support of a local contractor, meant I had to learn the ins and outs of Bay Area residential construction the hard way—on the ground, day by day.
That project turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I discovered how much I enjoyed the hands-on process, the problem-solving, and ultimately, the satisfaction of creating a high-quality living space from the ground up. It was this experience that inspired me to make a major shift in my professional life—transitioning from my career in corporate construction management to focus full-time on residential building. My goal became clear: to help other homeowners navigate the often overwhelming process of construction with greater confidence, clarity, and trust.
Since that first project, I’ve earned my California contractor’s license and have successfully completed multiple residential projects across the Bay Area, including ADUs and remodels. Each project builds on the lessons learned during that first hands-on experience, and I bring that same level of care and commitment to every job.

The company is led by founder Michael Fitzgerald, who grew up in Ireland, where his passion for construction began early. As a teenager, he spent summers on local building sites, developing hands-on skills and a lasting appreciation for the craft. That interest led him to earn a degree in Construction Economics and Management from Technological University Dublin, where he built a strong foundation in cost control, project planning, and construction business management.
After university, he spent over a decade in the corporate construction world, first as a quantity surveyor in the retail sector, and later as a cost consultant for commercial fit-outs and large-scale developments in the food and beverage industry. These 14 years gave him a deep understanding of what it takes to bring complex projects from idea to completion including the importance of communication, coordination, and budget discipline.
In 2020, he took on his first residential project in the Bay Area, building an ADU in his brother’s backyard in Berkeley. That hands-on experience reignited his passion and inspired the launch of FitzBuild. Since then, he’s become a licensed general contractor, completing a range of ADUs, remodels, and custom residential projects for local homeowners.
